The Rise and Fall of MBM: Perspectives from Departments, Schools, and the Industry

Ten years ago, mission-based management (MBM) was a burgeoning management initiative that many schools of medicine and their constituent departments were developing and embracing with differing expectations and degrees of success. It entailed capturing, analyzing, and reporting faculty effort, productivity, and financial data along mission lines and subsequently using this information for a variety of purposes, including resource allocation, faculty compensation, recruitment, and planning. However, MBM as an overarching framework appears to have faded with time. The purpose of this breakout session is to evaluate and share MBM experiences from different institutions and perspectives.
