Applying Business Planning Principles to
School of Medicine Department Management
Monday, June 23, 2008
The successful strategic, financial, and operational management
of a school of medicine (SOM) in today’s environment
requires the disciplined application of business principles.
This session in the ECG Trends Webinar Series focuses on the
use of such principles in managing an SOM’s constituent
departments, including:
Joint development of department goals and objectives by
SOM and department leadership.
Identification of specific actions and initiatives to
achieve these objectives.
Agreement on SOM investment to support the department.
Establishment of metrics to monitor progress and “return
on investment.”
Reevaluation to inform and guide subsequent planning cycles.
An overview of trends and issues encountered in academic
medicine’s adoption of business management principles
will be provided, followed by a discussion of best practice
examples. It is our intention to provide you with insights
on the specific steps and attendant issues in developing and
implementing business planning techniques for SOM and departmental
management.

Developing an IT Services Organization for
EHR/EMR Deployment
Thursday, May 22, 2008
As the pace of physician adoption of EMRs increases, many
health systems, and even provider organizations, are considering
creating services organizations to host and locally support
these systems. While the benefits of EMR hosting may be obvious
to the host and recipient (greater alignment, improved quality
of care, and reductions in cost), numerous issues are impeding
many organizations from being successful. In this Webinar,
we will discuss the major issues typically encountered in
crafting a hosted solution for EHRs, and we will provide an
example of an organization that is having some early success.
Areas to be discussed include:
Creating an effective governance structure and building
consensus.
Selecting appropriate implementation and support models.
Selecting the appropriate system and level of community
integration.
Understanding costs and ensuring appropriate financing.
Creating effective contracts with vendors and participants.
We will address each of these issues to assist organizations
in understanding the basic start-up requirements of EHR deployment
as well as more mature organizational models that support
the services organization in becoming sustainable.

Service line management approaches are being designed and
implemented by hospitals and health systems to enhance the
performance and positioning of key clinical services. The
challenge that many organizations are facing, however, is
how to build physician support for their service line management
structures and develop alignment with their clinical services
growth strategies.
This session in the ECG Trends Webinar Series will provide
specific recommendations for engaging physicians in service
line growth and development. Ways to build physician leadership
into your service line management structure will be described,
and best practice examples will be provided to help you:
Develop a service line management approach that matches
the needs and capabilities of your organization and its
physicians.
Effectively engage physicians in key service line development
efforts.
Design meaningful service line leadership roles and responsibilities
for physicians.

Enhancing Financial Performance
of Employed Physician Groups Under Provider-Based Clinic Arrangements
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
As hospitals continue to employ
more and more physicians, management teams are confronted
with mounting financial losses from physician practices. Converting
employed physician practices to provider-based clinics is
a sound financial strategy that performance-oriented hospitals
and systems are pursuing to enhance the financial results
of their employed physicians. This session will teach participants
how to evaluate the opportunity to convert practices to provider-based
status from a financial, operational, and regulatory perspective.
