Organizational Assessments

Healthcare providers, including hospitals, health systems, and medical groups, are facing unprecedented challenges as pressure mounts to increase efficiency, improve quality, demonstrate superior outcomes, and respond to changing market dynamics. Most provider organizations have developed strategic plans to respond to these pressures, yet only a fraction of these plans are executed effectively.

As a leader of your organization, you may be frustrated by the level of difficulty encountered when implementing strategic initiatives critical to your organization’s success. Signs of strategy stagnation can include inefficient and slow decision-making processes, a lack of accountability for performance, and line managers that focus on priorities of the past rather than the future. In short, your organizational structure may be a barrier to, rather than a driver of, strategic priorities.

ECG understands the complex relationship and correlation between organizational structure and strategic success. Our depth of experience in ensuring that organizational structures are aligned with your priorities, appropriately shaped and sized, and staffed to be as efficient as possible sets us apart in the industry.

Our services include assessment of, and alternative approaches to:

  • Strategic plan progress and limitations.
  • Organizational control structure.
  • Management responsibilities and staffing levels.
  • Performance measures and accountability.
  • Physician participation/leadership.
  • Progress reporting/plan modifications.

Our recommendations are based not only from our experience in understanding the complexities and culture of each provider organization, but in well-developed, data-driven processes that focus on results, including both short-term financial performance and long-term vision.

Selected Projects

Aligning organizational structure with strategy. Expand Minimize

ECG performed a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the organizational structure of a large, 900-bed tertiary hospital with the objective of better aligning the organizational structure to the hospital strategy. Specific tasks included examining issues related to control structure, span of control, and management responsibilities, and then refining those areas based on the organization’s emerging strategic plan. The work resulted in the hospital realigning the senior management team to reflect a service line orientation.

Redesigning the senior leadership structure for a multi-hospital campus. Expand Minimize

ECG was engaged by a health system made up of several discrete hospitals located on one campus to redesign each hospital’s separate senior management structure in a way that better leveraged senior management structures across the system enterprise. ECG’s recommendations helped this East Coast health system devise and execute a realigned senior leadership structure that reflected the separate disciplines required for management of children’s, women’s services, and acute care operations to best advantage.

Enhancing physician performance. Expand Minimize

ECG helped a 100-physician medical group create and conduct a broad-based performance enhancing project. The comprehensive analysis included examining operations, physician compensation, productivity, EMR use, practice management issues, deployment and optimization, and governance. The resulting design was implemented and successfully improved organizational effectiveness.
