- Assessing an alternative physician alignment strategy for a multihospital health system.
We were hired by one of the nation’s leading
health systems to explore the costs and benefits of moving to an employed physician model across a variety of key
specialties. We defined the numerous risks associated with the strategy, including the possibility of alienating the
remaining independent physicians, and quantified the resulting costs. These were weighed against the equally numerous
benefits of employment, including recapturing lost ancillary volumes, to develop a long-term impact analysis of evolving
toward a truly integrated delivery system. This analysis was accepted by leadership and is now a key planning tool for
considering issues relating to hospital/physician relationships.
- Developing a comprehensive strategy for physician relations.
ECG assisted senior management leadership, the Board
of Directors, and key physician leaders in developing a strategy that identified joint venture, electronic medical record,
and service line initiatives that would enable physician alignment and relationship development.
- Assessing a hospital’s physician strategy and physician resource plan in response to the development of a replacement hospital.
Working with management, the Board of Trustees, and
key physician leaders, ECG helped define the organization’s approach to physician employment, alignment, and recruiting.
- Improving the performance of the employed physician enterprise and developing a system-wide physician strategy.
Working with the senior leadership of this regional
health system, ECG identified opportunities to enhance the financial performance of the organization’s employed physicians
and developed a focused physician strategy to support individual hospital and system-wide clinical service growth plans.
Another key element of this project was to develop a specific protocol to coordinate physician recruitment, employment,
and contracting across the system.
- Development of an integrated cardiac service line.
ECG worked with senior management of the hospital,
practice plan, and key physician leaders across clinical departments to develop an integrated approach to cardiac services.
The result of the planning effort was a focused strategy and growth plan for comprehensive cardiac services at this teaching
hospital.
- Redesigning a health system’s physician strategy.
In response to a competitor’s employment of key
specialties, this client engaged ECG to revisit its own approach to physician relationships. Working with management,
the Board of Trustees, and key physician leaders, we confirmed the system’s overall approach of supporting independent
physician practices and identified several initiatives to help ensure that its medical staff would continue to thrive.
