Program Planning
Developing specialty programs and service lines enables healthcare providers to differentiate their
services, improve profitability, and better serve their communities. But to meet those important goals, a
specialty program must incorporate more than just the latest technology, a new logo, and a marketing campaign.
ECG understands that a specialty program can only be successful if it seamlessly integrates subspecialties and
functional areas and creates truly differentiated services for patients and physicians alike. Although these
programs can be created for any service, they are most commonly deployed in the areas of cardiac services,
cancer, neurosciences, and orthopedics.
ECG has helped numerous clients throughout the program planning process, from assessing potential
opportunities to developing comprehensive business plans to implementing multidisciplinary programs and
service lines. With over 30 years of healthcare experience, we have assisted clients across a wide range of
program planning engagements, including:
- Gauging the future impact of potentially disruptive technology.
- Strengthening hospital/physician relationships through specialty program development.
- Establishing market-leading service lines, clinical institutes, and Centers of Excellence.
- Creating health system partnerships with statewide or regional specialty institutes.
With every engagement, our pragmatic and functional approach is designed to improve clinical
quality, build hospital/physician affiliations, increase patient satisfaction, and strengthen the bottom
line. As a result, our clients enjoy thriving specialty programs that offer their communities exceptional
clinical services, a seamless continuum of multidisciplinary care, and standout levels of patient and
physician satisfaction.

Selected Projects
- Assisting a tertiary hospital with cardiac services program planning.
We assisted the hospital in
developing collaborative opportunities with local cardiologists. As part of the hospital/physician planning
process, we created a comprehensive situational assessment of the current program and cardiac environment,
guided stakeholders through a detailed affiliation planning process, established implementation criteria for
affiliation initiatives, and developed consensus around the preferred initiatives. As a result, the planning
process allowed the hospital and cardiologists to identify a portfolio of preferred affiliation strategies,
which quickly resulted in improved physician satisfaction and hospital/physician communication, ensuring the
continued development and success of the cardiovascular program.
- Developing a business plan for a comprehensive cancer center.
ECG assisted in the development of a
comprehensive cancer center that reflects the cooperative efforts of the state government, a research institute,
an academic medical institution, the two largest health systems in the state, and physicians throughout the region.
As a result of a comprehensive planning process across a number of state, academic, and community-based organizations,
a nationally acclaimed, locally based cancer center will be made available to patients throughout the state. The
Cancer Institute will incorporate the best clinical and research resources available in the region as a result of
its mission to expand research, promote prevention and treatment efforts, and continually improve cancer care for
citizens throughout the state.
- Developing an integrated musculoskeletal service line for a regional health system.
We assisted the health system with
developing an integrated musculoskeletal service line across its constituent hospitals. As part of the process,
we assessed the local service area, identified key patient demographics, completed a comprehensive program planning
process, and projected the program’s financial performance over a 5-year period. As a result, the new
musculoskeletal service line allowed our client to offer the first integrated subspecialty program of its kind to
patients throughout the state. As such, the service line is expected to capitalize on an innovative high-quality
program, significant market opportunity, and an aggressive marketing strategy to substantially enhance the health
system’s market visibility and patient volumes.
- Creating an integrated multihospital neurosciences program for a regional health system.
We assisted the health system with the
development of a comprehensive strategic and business plan for developing neurosciences services across its three
tertiary hospitals. As part of that process, we identified a range of short-term and long-term strategies for
increasing programmatic utilization throughout the service area, assessed the impact of developing an array of
market-leading neurosciences services, identified physician needs and affiliation options, and created a long-term
programmatic business plan with clear implementation tasks, time frames, and resource requirements. As a result,
the integrated program will position the health system as the leading regional provider for comprehensive and
innovative neurosciences services, increase the visibility of the health system throughout the region, strengthen
key hospital/physician relationships, and promote market-leading services for patients throughout the community.
- Assisting a regional health system and an independent orthopedic practice with development of an orthopedic institute.
ECG assisted a regional health system and a large orthopedic
medical group with development of an orthopedic institute, including the opening of a freestanding
ambulatory surgery center and medical office building. The project specified the scope, services,
and structure of an orthopedic institute and identified the surgery center joint venture terms between
the hospital, orthopedic medical group, and individual physician investors.
