Cardiac Programs
Cardiac programs have long been profit drivers and a service by which a hospital’s
reputation is made. Recently, growth due to technological improvements and an aging population
has put cardiac service development at the top of hospitals’ priority lists. These forces have
led to increasing competition among community hospitals and tertiary centers for cardiac patients,
as well as for the physician relationships that will fuel program growth.
Successful programs embrace care models that coordinate a full spectrum of cardiac services
and adopt business models that align incentives to promote efficient and accessible care. As always,
alignment with and between key physician specialties is critical to adapting to emerging trends,
navigating potential turf wars, and ultimately, reaching financial goals.
ECG helps hospitals work with their physicians to develop cardiac programs that are successful
for both parties. Whether for program planning, a joint venture, or new service development, we help
cement partnerships between hospitals and physicians. We analyze the financing and operations of cardiac
programs and ensure that they are based on sound business and operational plans. But even more important,
we help hospital management and the physicians think about the relationship into which they are entering –
an often-ignored component that can be more important to long-term success than the technical aspects.
Areas in which we work with hospitals include:
-
Cardiac Program Development – Planning organizational,
strategic, operational, and relationship aspects of cardiac services to create dominant, comprehensive programs.
-
Joint Venture Planning – Assistance with all aspects
of planning, from crafting agreements to developing business and operational plans.
-
Financial and Operational Analysis – Conducting operational
assessments of current operations and providing recommendations for improvement, as well as assisting in
implementing recommendations.

Selected Projects
- Assisting an academic medical center in cardiovascular service line planning.
ECG identified specific initiatives to
strengthen the future performance of the cardio-vascular service line, reviewed current performance to determine
opportunities for improvement, and examined current referral relationships to develop means to strengthen ties to
the community and increase referral volume.
- Assisting a hospital and physicians to develop a heart institute.
ECG evaluated the feasibility of developing and
created a structure for the Heart Institute. Changing referral patterns, expanding cardiologist rotations, and improving
referral communication with community primary care physicians were essential to success.
- Developing a joint multihospital cardiac services program.
ECG assisted two historically competitive hospitals
in the development of a joint collaborative heart institute. The venture resulted in the consolidation of the two hospital
heart programs into one new company and coordination of clinical operations across both campuses.
- Assisting a tertiary medical center, a community hospital, and cardiology medical groups to develop an integrated cardiac services program.
ECG conducted business planning for the cardiac
services facility and equipment requirements and assisted the medical groups in merger planning. As a result, the hospitals
and physicians created a new delivery structure position to respond to market developments.
- Assisting a school of medicine and a teaching hospital to develop a multidisciplinary cardiovascular institute.
ECG assisted in designing the organizational and
business model for the institute, including financial relationships with the medical school, affiliated health system,
and private practice physicians. We also developed a long-term business plan, including a community needs assessment,
a growth forecast, service mix, recruitment planning, and capital funding.
