PennsylvaniaECG helped the renowned children’s hospital strengthen operations and identify opportunities for increasing revenue collections.
Established in 1855, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the nation’s first hospital devoted exclusively to children. CHOP engages in cutting-edge research and provides excellent clinical treatment for children and their families.
The Challenge
With financial losses mounting despite increases in volume and productivity, CHOP’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (DCAPBS) asked ECG to help assess its revenue cycle performance and identify opportunities to strengthen operations and better support the department’s mission.
Our Solution
ECG began by conducting a qualitative assessment of revenue cycle operations. We then ran a quantitative analysis and benchmarking of key performance indicators and reviewed the contract language and reimbursement rates for the top five managed care plans.
After presenting our findings and recommendations, we partnered with DCAPBS leaders to increase the department’s visibility by describing its challenges and opportunities to the wider organization. As one of CHOP’s few hospital-based outpatient departments, DCAPBS’s issues were considered a lower priority. Gaining executive-level understanding and buy-in was critical to implementation success.
Our Results
As a result of ECG’s assessments and support, DCAPBS was able to:
- Identify near- and long-term opportunities to streamline operations and increase revenue collections.
- Rightsize the centralized billing office staffing to optimize the professional revenue cycle across the organization.
- Secure more favorable rates during payer negotiations and clarify its market position.
DCAPBS, with ECG’s help and the full engagement and support of CHOP senior leadership, quickly mobilized internal resources to increase evidence-based behavioral services for all patients.
