As part of a proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule rule, CMS intends to implement a change to split/shared E&M inpatient visits in which the “substantive portion” of a visit will be measured by time to determine who is able to bill for the visit.

Although CMS has proposed to delay the implementation until 2025, organizations that are already utilizing split/shared billing or planning to implement it should take steps now to ensure compliance with the new rule and address operational changes needed to mitigate any potential adverse implications.
