Patty joined ECG in 2008 with extensive experience in consulting and academic healthcare administration. She has experience with strategic and business planning, research administration, physician compensation, and billing and clinic operations. She previously worked at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine as Department Administrator for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) and as Director of Finance and Administration for the Department of Pediatrics, as well as Director for Clinical Planning and Implementation within the Dean’s Office. During that time, she opened and managed a multispecialty clinic; developed protocols for research programs; created funds flow models and faculty incentive plans; collaborated with hospital leaders on work expectations, FTE levels, and financial support for physician medical direction/administrative roles; and established robust reporting for clinical productivity expectations and annual budgets. In her consulting roles, Patty has provided faculty practice plan billing office reviews and strategic planning for specialty services and academic primary care networks and has created organizational and governance structures. She received a master of health administration degree from UW and a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University.

Sue spearheaded ECG’s CV governance and leadership survey initiative with Thomson Reuters and led the development of "Strategies for Superior Cardiovascular Service Line Performance," a book published by HealthLeaders Media. She has extensive experience in programmatic development, CV service line strategic planning, hospital/physician alignment, physician workforce planning, and financial analysis. Prior to joining ECG, Sue worked for Arthur Andersen LLP in its healthcare litigation consulting practice. She holds a master of business administration degree from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and bachelor’s degrees in English and finance from the University of Richmond.

Since 1976, Ed has held positions in the healthcare industry, including Director of Finance for a major medical center and Director of Operations/Chief Financial Officer for an HMO. Since joining ECG in 1989, he has assisted academic medical centers, faculty practice plans, and medical schools in the areas of governance, organizational design, operations enhancement, management, and strategic issues. Ed holds a master of business administration degree from Loyola University Chicago and was formally licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.

In the healthcare field since 1987, Earl has assisted numerous clients in a broad range of challenges, including physician organization development, business and strategic planning, clinical workforce planning, graduate medical education reimbursement and program design, and organization and operation of ambulatory care. Before joining ECG, he was part of the senior administration for a 1,300-bed university-affiliated community hospital. As a Director at a national consulting firm, he focused on managed care contracting, operations, and revenue recovery. His expertise was developed while he was Director of Managed Care/Vice President of Practice Operations at Founders Health Care (Allegheny Integrated Health Group) and an Operations Manager/Medical Center Administrator at FHP Inc. Over the years, his work has resulted in tactics to enhance growth and performance, reduce costs, and improve patient populations’ access to needed healthcare services. Prior to joining ECG, Scott was a Director in the Health Industries Advisory practice of a Big 4 consulting firm and was a Director for Tenet Healthcare Corporation’s predecessor company, where he was responsible for overseeing acquisition and development activities, as well as leading planning and financial analyses in support of transactions and capital investments. He is a frequent speaker and author of healthcare industry white papers and publications on a variety of topics. Scott has a bachelor of arts degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, with a concentration in public administration and an emphasis on health services administration.

He has had the opportunity to advise several of the highest-ranking AMCs and health systems in the United States. Ben leads ECG’s Revenue Cycle practice. He assists health systems across the country in evaluating, optimizing, and improving their revenue cycle to support enhanced financial performance and operational alignment. He is also an expert on the operational and regulatory requirements for transitioning from freestanding to provider-based billing designation, and he has helped numerous organizations with this conversion process. Prior to becoming a member of our firm, Ben worked with a large multi-provider clinic, where he helped manage billing operations. While there, he also assisted with the implementation of a new practice management software system and developed the subsequent policies and procedures pertaining to the revenue cycle process. Ben holds a master of business administration degree from F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Washington.

Jim has conducted dozens of consulting engagements for clients, focusing on managed care contracting, innovative and conventional reimbursement strategies, business operations, and strategic planning. Prior to rejoining ECG in 2008, Jim served as an independent consultant with clients that included Partners HealthCare System, Inc.; UMass Memorial Medical Group; Neighborhood Health Plan; and others. Prior to joining ECG in 1997, Gary spent 7 years with Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, where he directed strategic planning and business development activities. He also directed the international division and held the position of Chief Financial Officer for Sharp’s for-profit, seven-company subsidiary. He previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees for The Carle Foundation. Gary received a master of business administration degree from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of California, Riverside.

Leah works in ECG’s Academic Healthcare practice. She has a broad range of experience with GME planning and academic strategy. Leah works with large, university-based AMCs and their component organizations, as well as with community teaching hospitals and academic health systems, on issues specifically related to the hospital-based academic enterprise. She possesses deep expertise and a highly detailed knowledge of GME program accreditation requirements and Medicare reimbursement regulations. Since joining ECG in 2006, she has worked with clients to facilitate strategic planning activities specific to the clinical-academic enterprise, conduct system-level programmatic reviews, and assess the feasibility of establishing/rationalizing GME programs. Leah has master of business administration and public health degrees from Boston University and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jennifer focuses on physician practice issues, ambulatory operations, process redesign, and medical group/hospital integration. Her practice concentrates on the organizational, strategic, operational, and financial alignment between large multispecialty group practices and affiliated health systems to achieve care delivery integration. She has served as an interim executive at a 2,000-physician management services organization, leading large-scale operational/information technology changes across employed physician groups. More recently, as industry incentives have shifted to value-based care delivery, Jennifer has led accountable care strategy engagements, with a focus on the reimbursement impact, required operational change, and necessary cultural transformation. She is a frequent speaker at American Medical Group Association (AMGA) and Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) industry meetings. Prior to joining ECG in 2004, Jennifer worked in health/welfare benefits consulting at a global consulting firm. Previously, she provided day-to-day physician practice management. Jennifer holds a master of science degree in health systems management from Rush University and a bachelor of science degree, with an emphasis on science-business, from the University of Notre Dame.

With more than 40 years of experience in addressing the needs of patients and the leadership and patient safety/quality issues of various healthcare organizations, Dr. Hallal draws upon his expertise to provide assistance and insight on ECG’s many healthcare reform projects. Dr. Hallal’s extensive experience is instrumental in aiding healthcare systems, physicians, and medical practices to move forward and, potentially, in new directions as the changes created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) unfold across the nation. Immediately prior to joining ECG, Dr. Hallal was a consultant to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. He has had a distinguished career in the private practice of clinical and interventional cardiology. His academic posts include Professor of Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Hallal was a Certified Surveyor at The Joint Commission, where he developed a strong interest in and knowledge of quality and safety issues in medicine. He holds a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.

At ECG, Michelle focuses on helping physician groups leverage their EHRs to address strategic and operational challenges. She is committed to inspiring her clients and challenging their vendors to use their EHRs to optimize overall organizational performance. Recent client experience includes developing several hospital/physician joint ventures, redesigning compensation plans for hospital-employed physicians, and conducting numerous operations improvement studies in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Kevin speaks frequently to industry associations and, in 1998, received the Yerger/Seawell Article of the Year Award for outstanding contribution to professional literature from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). Kevin holds a master of business administration degree from The University of Chicago and a bachelor of science degree in business administration from The University of Arizona.

Adam is the head of ECG’s Valuation Services practice. Since 1997, he has conducted valuations and appraisals of business enterprises, physician and executive compensation arrangements, accountable care funds flow arrangements and capital and intangible assets, as well as conducted economic damages assessments, for taxable and tax-exempt entities. His valuation studies are presented in a manner that allows parties to clearly understand how and why conclusions were reached so that they are best able to achieve fair and defensible agreements. He has conducted industry-leading research on drivers of physician compensation and speaks regularly on a variety of healthcare valuation topics. Adam is a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) with the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts, a member of the American Society of Appraisers, and qualified by the Institute of Business Appraisers to perform business appraisal reviews. He received a master of business administration degree from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a bachelor of arts degree in econometrics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Prior to joining ECG in 1997, he worked in medical group management for a large integrated delivery system in the Midwest. His background in operations and strategy provides him with the unique skills necessary to evaluate and address the most difficult healthcare issues. Jim is a regular speaker at national conferences on the topics of physician integration, health reform, and incentive design. Jim earned master of business administration and master of health administration degrees from Saint Louis University. He has a bachelor of science degree in finance, also from Saint Louis University.

Katy Reed

In her practice, Katy focuses on the areas of strategic planning, hospital/physician alignment, transaction assistance, and service line development. She has expertise in cardiology and oncology services and has worked with a variety of clients on their service line and programmatic needs. Most recently, Katy facilitated several hospital/physician transactions, including the acquisition and integration of multiple specialty groups and their associated ancillary services (e.g., infusion therapy) into a large medical center. She has substantial experience developing alignment models, designing funds flow and governance structures, conducting fair market value assessments, evaluating provider-based conversions, supporting physician practice valuations, facilitating hospital/physician negotiations, and providing ongoing integration assistance. Katy holds a master of business administration degree from the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business and a bachelor of science degree in biology from The University of Texas at Austin.

Ken Roorda

Ken leads ECG's Children's Hospitals practice. Having worked in healthcare planning and operations since 1991, Ken has significant experience working for children's hospitals, AMCs, pediatric programs, practice plans, and other pediatric physician organizations. His work spans strategic and business planning, development of affiliations and other physician/hospital relationships, and topics related to physician group practice formation and operations improvement. Before joining ECG in 2000, Ken was responsible for directing the operations of a hospital-owned, 32-site clinic network. He holds a master of business administration degree and a master of science degree from The University of Arizona.

Steve Sadowski

Steve provides consulting expertise to academic medical centers throughout the country, particularly on matters related to faculty practice. His experience includes engagements involving incentive plan design, organizational structuring, ambulatory care operations, design of financial arrangements, graduate medical education, professional fee billing, and managed care arrangements. Steve has spoken at national conferences and authored articles for industry publications. Prior to joining ECG in 1991, Steve had six years of line and staff experience in healthcare organizations, including three years as a Medical Group Administrator for the surgical department at a major Boston teaching hospital. He received a master of business administration degree from the Boston University Health Sector Management Program and a graduate certificate in management from Harvard University.

John Skurka

John works on an array of practice acquisition projects, drawing upon approximately 30 years of financial and operational expertise. More specifically, his past experience includes consulting engagements with large academic medical centers and their related group practices, as well as hospital management. He also brings an in-depth understanding of the concerns and needs of the community-based physician. Before joining ECG in 2010, John most recently served as Senior Consulting Manager – Financial Services for a national consulting firm. He previously held positions that included Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for a national portable X-ray provider; Director for a regional healthcare consulting firm; Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a professional liability insurance carrier; Director in the Corporate Finance Department of Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia; and Supervisor at Coopers & Lybrand. John holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from The Pennsylvania State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Ken Steele

Ken has extensive experience in managed care and hospital senior leadership positions, as well as in contract review, analysis, and negotiations. Ken has had responsibility for 20 hospitals with over $1 billion in annual managed care revenue. He has led many hospitals and hospital systems in substantially improving their contract reimbursement rates, contract language, and revenue cycle management. In addition to managed care, Ken has a comprehensive background in hospital operations, having held multiple hospital leadership positions, including CEO. He has successfully managed a hospital’s financial and strategic turnaround in a large, competitive market. Ken holds a master of health administration degree from the program in hospital and health services administration and a bachelor of science degree in business administration, both from The Ohio State University.

Matt Sturm

Since joining ECG in 2003, Matt has focused on strategic and business planning, service line development, and mergers and acquisitions within hospitals, health systems, and medical groups. He has a proven track record of developing innovative solutions that can be implemented. As a firm leader in oncology services, he has assisted dozens of oncology clients with a variety of strategic and operational issues. Matt also serves on the expert advisory panel for "Oncology Issues," the journal of the Association of Community Cancer Centers. Matt holds a master of business administration degree from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Baylor University.

Clay Tellers

For 15 years, Clay has consulted extensively to academic medical centers (AMCs), assessing and improving their strategic, operational, and financial performance. He has deep expertise in evaluating and improving the finances, operations, and organizational infrastructure of schools of medicine (SOMs) and other health sciences schools and in developing financial and other affiliations across the components of an AMC. Prior to joining ECG in 1999, Clay was a Quality Improvement Analyst and an administrative fellow for PacifiCare, now UnitedHealthcare, a large, multistate managed care organization. He holds a master of health administration degree from the University of Southern California and a bachelor of arts degree in human biology from Stanford University.

Jessica Turgon

Since 1997, Jessica has assisted clients with healthcare operations improvement, revenue cycle optimization, and cancer program strategic planning and management. Her project work includes directing operations and revenue cycle improvement initiatives in academic medical centers, community hospitals, and physician practice settings. In addition, Jessica has extensive experience developing and leading oncology programs with multidisciplinary and clinical research initiatives. Her leadership in cancer center operations has significantly enhanced the financial and strategic standing of several programs, while also improving patient and staff satisfaction. Prior to joining ECG, Jessica was an Administrator of Clinical Services at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. She received a master of business administration degree from The George Washington University and a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Marymount University.

Isaac has over 20 years of experience in management consulting for healthcare and IT services and has served in progressive leadership positions. His experience encompasses a variety of strategic, business planning, and organizational improvement projects, with a particular focus on merging strategy and technology to achieve workforce optimization. He is actively involved in providing resource management solutions to healthcare systems and hospitals, having done so across the globe. Prior to joining ECG, Isaac was practice leader for a global consulting firm, where he was responsible for growing the firm’s outreach in North America, South Africa, India, and the Middle East. Services included management consulting for hospitals in the areas of workforce management, IT solutions, and mergers and acquisition strategies. Isaac holds a master of business administration degree from Newport University and a master certificate in business management from A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, as well as a bachelor of science degree in engineering production/process from the University of Pune in India.

Terri Welter

Terri is the head of ECG’s Contracting and Reimbursement practice. Since 1996, she has been working in the areas of managed care and provider payment, including strategy development, reimbursement, contract negotiations, and operations. She has recently been closely involved with assisting health systems, hospitals, medical groups, physician hospital organizations (PHOs), and independent practice associations (IPAs) with developing and executing the types of arrangements needed to successfully react to healthcare reform and to establish contracting structures that facilitate hospital/physician alignment and clinical integration. Terri is a frequent national speaker on the topics of evolving provider payment vehicles and accountable care organization (ACO) development. She holds a master of science degree, concentrating in healthcare administration, from Villanova University and a bachelor of arts degree in preprofessional studies from the University of Notre Dame.

Prior to joining ECG, John served as a practice leader at a national consulting firm where he developed a significant IT and operations improvement practice. He has also served in C-level positions for large medical groups. John holds a master of health administration degree and a bachelor of arts degree in organizational communications from Indiana University.

Dave Wofford

Since 1996, Dave's consulting career has focused on physician business affairs and hospital/physician relationships. He works closely with medical groups on matters such as group practice formation, physician compensation plan redesign, revenue cycle management, and clinic operations. He also advises hospitals on physician practice acquisitions, fair market value assessments, strategic planning, and the negotiation and development of professional services arrangements with physicians. The breadth of Dave's experience provides him with an understanding of the issues related to hospital/physician relationships and affiliations, as well as the perspective and value that each party brings. This, in turn, allows him to help parties reach sustainable arrangements. He is currently spearheading the development of a book on hospital/physician alignment, which is scheduled to be published later this year. Prior to joining ECG, Dave served as an officer in the U.S. Army for 8 years. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Duke University and a master of business administration degree from The University of Chicago.
