Paying Advanced Practice Providers for Call Coverage

Kathryn and Alex will give a speech discussing how staffing shortages, high patient acuity, and 24/7 care demands strain the healthcare system, advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified registered nurse anesthetists, are increasingly being asked to provide call coverage. This workshop will explore the factors driving this shift, the compensation models emerging in response, and the legal, operational, and fair market value considerations that organizations must weigh when structuring APP call pay arrangements. Special emphasis is placed on EMTALA compliance, equity with physician models, and strategies to ensure commercial reasonableness.
