Why More Health Systems Are Launching Their Own Health Plans

Health systems and healthcare professionals carry the full burden of delivering care but are not in a position to manage the full cost of care. This is changing. While the large, national commercial payers are here to stay, increasingly, health systems are getting in the insurance game in many markets.

Provider-sponsored health plans (PSHPs) give health systems more control over the premium dollar and enable care delivery to be better aligned with patient outcomes while actively managing costs. And while PSHPs may lack the resources and reach of national plans, they can foster patient loyalty and offer more personalized, community-focused products in local markets.

In this podcast with Becker’s Healthcare, ECG partner Joe Mangrum talks with Lila Benayoun of MetroPlusHealth about the evolution of the “payvider” model, common pitfalls that PSHPs face, and how PSHPs can improve access and outcomes for patients.
